Permission to Be Extra: Why I Wear Tiaras on Random Tuesdays

I didn’t win a pageant. I’m not on my way to a gala. And no, I’m not throwing a fancy party for my cat (although, never say never).😉
I’m just a woman who wears a tiara on random Tuesdays. On grocery runs. While baking sourdough. Sometimes while folding laundry.
Not for attention. Not for likes. But because it brings me joy.

And if you’ve ever felt silly for loving sparkly things, or like you needed a reason to dress up or express yourself… this one’s for you.

How It Started (Spoiler: It Wasn’t About the Tiara)

For a long time, I played it safe. I blended in. I wore a lot of black t-shirts, practical shoes, and kept my “too much-ness” in check.
But deep down, I’ve always loved the magical and the whimsical. Fairy lights, twirly dresses, handwritten letters, and yes, tiaras.

One day, I was cleaning out a drawer and found the tiara I had purchased decades ago from a multi-level marketing jewelry company. Always thinking I’d wear it… someday… I finally decided just to put it on, kind of as a joke. Then I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror… and I smiled.

Something about it just clicked. I felt a little lighter. A little braver. A little more me.

So I started wearing it. Not every day. Just on the days I needed to remember who I was. And when I wanted a little ✨sparkle✨

Being “Extra” Is a Rebellion Against Burnout

Our world praises busy. Quiet, small joys? Not so much.
If you’re not hustling, grinding, and being efficient, you’re “wasting time.” But that mindset burns us out.

Wearing a tiara is my way of saying:

I don’t need a special occasion to feel special.
I am the occasion.

It’s a playful rebellion. A soft, sparkly pushback against the idea that you need to earn joy.
Wearing a tiara reminds me that I can choose delight, even in the ordinary.

What People Think (and Why I Don’t Care)

I’ve gotten looks.
Some smiles. Some confusion.
And yes, the occasional eye-roll. But here’s what I’ve learned:

Most people wish they had the nerve to be a little extra, too.

Every time someone sees me and says, “I love your crown,” or “I wish I could pull that off,” I smile and say, “You totally could.” I’m contemplating just having tiaras made out of pipe cleaners tucked away in my bag, ready to give away for just such an occasion. ☺️

You don’t need permission from anyone else. You get to give it to yourself.

Tiny Joys Add Up to a Sparkly Life

Wearing a tiara isn’t just about the accessory. It’s a metaphor for all the little things we set aside because they feel “too much.”

Here are a few more of my “extra” joys:

  • Using the fancy teacup on a random Wednesday
  • Adding fairy lights to the kitchen window
  • Stringing up excessive amounts of Christmas lights all year long
  • Playing 80s pop while making jam
  • Wearing cranberry red lipstick to the library
  • Watching The Man From Snowy River in a floaty dress

None of these are big or expensive. But together, they remind me to stay connected to joy.
To whimsy. To me.

“Don’t let anyone dull your sparkle.” – Unknown

You were never meant to blend in. You were meant to shine.
Even on Tuesdays. Especially on Tuesdays.

From One Sparkly Soul to Another: Here’s What I Hope You Remember

You don’t need a reason to bring joy into your day.
But if you’ve been waiting for permission to wear the thing, do the thing, love the thing… here it is!

Print it. Tape it to your mirror. Take a picture of it and use it as your cellphone’s lock screen. And if the tiara (or any other ridiculously fun and silly accessory) calls to you, wear it proudly.

The world needs more women who shine just because they want to.
